Meditations in Nature: Quotes to Inspire and to Live By

Originally posted on The Trek on September 13th 2016

I feel that sometimes in life, people need a little inspiration. Many find that through books and movies. Hell, I think just to name two, “A Walk in the Woods” by Bill Bryson, and “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed, both had a huge influence on getting people to go out on a hike in the wilderness in order to find themselves. We’re romanced by media and a lot of times get stuck daydreaming without actually getting our feet wet or making the plunge (depending on how big of a leap of faith these dreams are to you).

One thing that I’ve used for encouragement and inspiration would be quotes. It doesn’t matter who they are from so long as the words speak true to the way I want to think and live. It sounds silly, but it’s really that simple. A few words can help rewire your brain and once you change your thinking, things start to look up. Simultaneously, hiking the trail with all the words of wisdom embedded in me has pulled me out of a funk that I was stuck in for decades. The trail itself can heal the soul, but that’s step two. Step one is putting on your helmet, getting a gentle smack of encouragement on the butt, and getting in the game. Many dream of hiking the trail, but never will because they quit before they’ve even started.

Below I posted some quotes that were inspiring to me. What you do with them is up to you. Write them on post-it notes and stick them all over your house, add an app or join a mailing list to receive new quotes daily, or stare blankly at your monitor or handheld device as you scroll through them, then get on with your day. It’s entirely up to you! But if you’re dreaming of a thru hike or anything else for that matter, remember that life flies past you quickly, and a life spent strictly working to the bone rewards you with nothing but regrets. Don’t hesitate for too long, and don’t forget to get out there and live damnit!

  1. I’m a sucker for quotes and your words resonate with me. I agree that they are motivation and can rewrite of brain in an instant. Plus you mentioned two of my most favorite movies besides “The way”, also hiking related.
I’m glad I stumbled across you “Stubbs”, our soul seems to have the same things in common. 😉
    Beautifully written btw.
